3 Reasons to Re-Imagine Discipleship in 2025

Are followers of Jesus filling their communities with heaven’s virtues of faith, hope, and love? Or is culture reducing christians into shells of faith… filled with skepticism, anxiety, and division?

Just as darkness is merely the absence of light, spiritual darkness points to an absence of spiritual light. Transformation starts with us—the torchbearers of Jesus’ light—rekindling the flame and boldly illuminating the way.

In our quest to make Jesus’ church more relevant, we’ve fallen short in helping Jesus’ followers burn bright with spiritual influence. The time has come to Re-Imagine Discipleship. Let’s dive into three compelling reasons why re-imagining discipleship is essential in 2025, and how you can make 2025 your year to shine.

Reason #1: The Evolving Cultural Landscape

Our culture is shifting rapidly. The rise of digital dependence, the polarization of journalism in that space, and the evolution of individualism into self-centered entitlement are fueling the skepticism, anxiety, and division that surround us. With no unifying voice in sight, the darkness is growing deeper.

But there is an antidote. Jesus brought the kingdom of heaven into His politically divided culture. He became a trusted, unifying voice. He modeled a disciple-making strategy that turned ordinary people into spiritual influencers-building a community rooted in faith, hope, and love.

To address today’s cultural crisis, we must Re-Imagine Discipleship to do the same. We need to meet people where they are—in the digital space—introduce them to the unifying voice and mission of Jesus, surround them with a supportive community, and equip them to become spiritual influencers who shine light in the darkness themselves.

Reason #2: The Need for Personalized Discipleship

In today’s “custom-centric” world, cookie-cutter discipleship no longer resonates. From tailored homes and medicine to personalized education and fitness routines, people expect custom investment—and discipleship models that rely solely on worship services and generic small groups are falling short.

Jesus faced a similar challenge. In His day, temple and synagogue gatherings were the primary avenues for spiritual growth. But He introduced a revolutionary approach: a small, intentional disciple-making community where He invested deeply in a few. These few, empowered by the Holy Spirit, earned the respect of the people and built the church in the face of intense opposition.

We must Re-Imagine Discipleship to do the same. It’s time to redefine discipleship as a journey where every follower becomes a person worthy of respect and partners with the Spirit to advance Jesus’ kingdom on earth. Public gatherings must be paired with smaller, intentional environments that provide the personalized investment people crave and desperately need.

Reason #3: Jesus’ Mandate for Multiplication

The influence of darkness is multiplying. To push back this growing tide with Jesus’ light, we must do more than add disciples—we must multiply them.

You likely agree with this. You may have even tried to multiply disciples yourself but found it harder than you imagined, falling short of the success you’d heard was possible. If that’s you, you’ve probably realized that true multiplication demands more than Re-Imagining Discipleship—it requires breaking free from an addiction to addition-based discipleship.

“Addition Addiction” has three symptoms that sabotage multiplication:

  1. Confusing rapid addition with true multiplication.

  2. Failing to recognize the severe limitations of addition.

  3. Refusing to remove the barriers that hinder multiplication.

Freedom from this addiction requires humility—a willingness to reflect, confess, and repent. The good news? Jesus specializes in addition recovery.

Through His intentional disciple-making strategy, Jesus equipped twelve disciples to grow into seventy-two, and the seventy-two expanded into a movement of hundreds. If we’re willing to follow His example, we too can spark a movement of multiplication that transforms the darkness into light.
